Cleartrip, an online travel aggregator, confirms customers’ data breach

Flipkart-owned online travel aggregator Cleartrip confirmed in an email to its customers that there had been a major data breach.

“This is to inform you that a security anomaly has occurred which has resulted in illegal and unauthorized access to a portion of Cleartrip’s internal systems,” the email read. However, the company did not reveal any details about what data the hackers accessed but assured that no sensitive information was part of the breach.

“We are fully aware that this could concern you. We would like to assure you that apart from some details that are part of your profile, no sensitive information related to your Cleartrip account has been compromised as a result of this anomaly in our systems,” the company said.

The online travel aggregator said it has contacted the authorities and is taking appropriate legal action and remedies in accordance with the law. It also advised users to reset their account passwords as a precaution.

“We have identified a security anomaly in several of our internal systems. Our information security team is currently investigating the matter with a leading external forensics partner and taking the necessary action. Appropriate legal action and remedies are being evaluated and action is being taken in accordance with the law,” a Cleartrip spokesperson said in a statement.

This is not the first time Cleartrip has faced a major data breach. In 2017, the company suffered a major data breach when its website was defaced for several minutes by a group called the Turtle Squad.

Sunny Nehra, a security researcher and founder of cybersecurity startup “Secure Your Hacks”, further said that the hackers were selling the data on a private invite-only forum on the dark web. However, the exact price for which the data was put up for sale was not mentioned in the post.

Hrush Bhatt, Matthew Spacie and Stuart Crighton co-founded Cleartrip in 2006. In April 2021, Flipkart acquired Cleartrip for around $40 million.
